Aaron WeyMD, FAAOS, FACSAdult and Pediatric Spine Surgery

For Referring Providers

Dr. Wey sees adults and children with spine problems in North Jersey. Most referred patients do not need surgery, and those patients go back to you with a clear plan rather than being kept in the surgical pipeline.

How urgently to send

  1. Same day: emergency department

Cauda equina syndrome (new bladder or bowel dysfunction, saddle numbness), rapidly progressive weakness, unstable fracture, suspected epidural abscess. Send the patient to the emergency department and call the office so Dr. Wey is aware.

  2. Within days

Progressive myelopathy, a new motor deficit, a stable fracture with pain, spinal infection or tumor, a child with a rapidly changing curve. Mark the referral urgent and call; these patients are fitted in.

  3. Routine

Radiculopathy or stenosis that has not settled with a course of non-surgical care, axial pain with imaging findings, adult or pediatric deformity, failed previous surgery, and second opinions.

What to send

  • Your note or the reason for referral, with the patient's phone number and insurance.
  • Imaging: a disc, a portal link, or the name of the imaging center. The report alone is not enough; the images are read here.
  • A record of non-surgical care so far: therapy, injections, medicines. It shapes the plan and it is what insurers ask for.
  • For previous spine surgery: the operative report and implant record if available.

What you get back

  • A consult note after every visit, with the diagnosis, the plan, and what is being asked of you, if anything.
  • Non-operative patients returned to you with a written plan: therapy orders, injections arranged, and the point at which to send them back.
  • For surgical patients, the operative note, discharge instructions, and follow-up schedule, and a call about anything that affects their other care.
  • A direct line. If you want to discuss a patient before referring, call the office and ask for Dr. Wey; he calls back, usually the same business day.
